Wortham swamps Mexia in opening volleyball match

Mexia opened its volleyball season with a three-set loss at Wortham on Tuesday, Aug. 9. Wortham won the first set 25-12 and followed that up with a 25-11 victory in the second round. The Lady Bulldogs closed out the victory with a 25-8 triumph in the third set. Wortham appeared to be in mid-season form with an offense that featured strong first passes to the setter which led to big swings throughout the match. The Lady Bulldogs’ spikes put Mexia on its heels and the Ladycats had trouble getting into a rhythm on offense. Wortham coach DeAnna Whaley said it was a good first effort for her squad. They played with confidence, which wasn’t always the case during their scrimmages. “Our goal today was to come out and play as a team and have fun,” Whaley said. “Because we got down on ourselves during our scrimmage. So, I wanted them to understand just momentum of the game and staying on top of the game. So they came out and showed out today.”
