Jack Johnson, the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, had been invited to be the main attraction. Johnson was the first African-American to claim such a title. The developing story of Johnson and his boxing rival is delightfully covered in “Crazy Fourth,” researched and written by Toby Smith and published by the University of New Mexico.
