According to the Legislative Reference Library of Texas, John R. Henry was born April 16, 1815, in Belmont County, Tenn., and came to Robertson County in 1837. He lived in different areas of the state, but the story goes he came to the area that would be his future home to hunt buffalo in 1840 and traded with the native Americans and scattered settlers in the area. He spotted a certain wooded knoll three miles northwest of Springfield and southwest of what is now Mexia. He vowed to someday return and build a home there.
