Mexia Garden Club President Patty Manley congratulates Micheal Vestal for winning the July Yard of the Month. Michael and Joy Vestal live at 706 E. Main. The patriotic theme in honor of the 4th of July highlights the turn-of-the-century home. A large array of petunias is nestled in an yellow metal lawn chair on the lawn under a large sprawling tree. On the light post and on the porch rail is purslane, a common herb with reddish green stems and leaves. It is often used as a salad. Baskets of Boston Fern are found on the front porch. You will find purple sweet potato vines and Lantana in the flower beds. Dinner plate Hibiscus has already bloomed for the season. There is a Turk’s Cap that Michael transplanted and has babied along that is healthy and thriving. There is also pink Vinca in the garden. The home appears to be right out of a Better Homes and Garden magazine; it is quite a delight.
Editor’s note: The sales tax return numbers in the July 8 edition of The Mexia News were based on incorrect data. The following report is the corrected version of the July 2020 figures for the Bi-stone area.
Those who keep track of COVID-19 statistics and numbers were crying foul last weekend when they noticed large disparities between Limestone County’s report on the number of active cases of the virus and the Texas Department of State Health Services’ reported number.
