Done deal: MISD board OKs budget, tax rate

The Mexia Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the 2022-2023 fiscal year budget on Monday, Aug. 29. There was a public forum for residents to express their opinions, but no one signed up to speak. The total budget is $21,591,673, a 5.2% increase from last year. “This is budgeted at 91% attendance rate based off of last year’s attendance rate,” Director of Finance Erika Chapa said. The revenue for the general fund from local taxes is $5.5 million; from state program revenue is $15 million; and federal program revenue is $956,000, Chapa said. Last year, the 2021-2022 Maintenance and Operations Fund tax rate was $0.99240 and the Interest and Sinking Fund was $0.19040, which is a total tax rate of $1.1828, Chapa said. The board approved the suggested M&O and I&S tax rates of $0.9596 and $0.1888, respectively, for a total of $1.1484. “We’re operating under a tax depression that’s controlled by the state. The purpose of this is to try and balance the increased property values,” Chapa said. “The tax rate we will propose to you tonight … is the lowest tax rate we can adopt in order to make sure our bond debt is paid.”
