John Wesley Hardin spent some

John Wesley Hardin spent some wild Saturday nights in Mexia

Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God. and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days. HOSEA 3:5. *** You might could stand a bit of humor to start the day. Kimberly BROYLES supplies us with such a quote: “Adam and Eve had an ideal marriage. He didn’t have to hear about all the men she could have married, and she didn’t have to hear about the way his mother cooked.” *** I heard about another death which strikes a chord of sadness. The deceased is Sumpter FRAZIER, an early 1960s Mexia High School graduate. I last saw and talked with Sumpter in April of 2015 during the 50th wedding anniversary reception of Dick and Linda FLATT at First Presbyterian Church. He was on the first football team I wrote about after joining the old Mexia Daily News staff, during the 1959 season. During the Flatts’ anniversary, for a short segment of time, there was a mini-meeting of some of those 1959 players. Among them were Dick FLATT, Robert CONN, Frazier, Maurice (Bubba) FIFE, and I believe Bill MATTHEWS was also on hand for some ’59 talk. Frazier was once described by his high school coach, Don STEPHENS, as “one of the toughest,” despite not being physically large. Sumpter showed his toughness for the Black Cats while holding down the center position and sticking with his blocks. Frazier, a native Mexiaite, had a great, respected career as an attorney and pharmacist. May prayers continue for his family… *** One of the closest-knit Mexia graduating classes is that of 1983. Those class members were back in their hometown Saturday for its 40th reunion, The reunion was held at Tranquilo Ranch near Groesbeck. The ’83 graduating class had 109. Sixty-four of the class were in attendance at the reunion. Class members came for the get-together from as far away as Tennessee and Nevada. Dinner was catered by Mi Rancho of Groesbeck. A dance followed the dinner. Another reunion is planned this year during MHS Homecoming weekend, on Saturday, September 30 at Springfield Hall… *** Belated congratulations to J.R. and Barbara BUCHANAN on occasion of their 68th wedding anniversary. J.R. is a retired, former longtime businessman of Mexia. The couple live in Cotton Gin. Their sons are Robert and Rickey. The Buchanan’s anniversary day came this past Sunday… *** With some help from the late historian/friend Tom CHATHAM, longtime Mexiaite, I thought perhaps it was time to take a look at a wild side of life via the outlaw exploits of John Wesley HARDIN. John Wesley roamed all over Limestone County, with several incidents he pulled off in Mexia. It seems that Hardin, who had kinfolks in Mexia, Prairie Hill and perhaps at other locations, carved out a niche of lawlessness throughout the Bi-Stone Area.
