Visit brings back memories of era of country doctors

And He that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I always do those things that please Him. – As He spake these words, many believed on Him. – ST. JOHN 8:29, 30. *** This coming Friday is a day for all patriots to remember. On August 4 in 1790, the United States Coast Guard was established. During wars and throughout the years, the Coast Guard has played significant roles in protection of and discovering dangers on our coastlines…And, this coming Tuesday, we once more will have a full moon, completely unrelated to our great Coast Guard… *** As extremely hot weather continues, football workouts for the approaching season are being scheduled. Yep. THE season is upon us… *** Kenneth and Claire MATHIS are a delightful elderly couple who live in China Spring. Kenneth once worked for Kraft Foods and as a representative for that company told me he always enjoyed going to Mexia, calling on H-E-B, its predecessor Safeway, the former Brookshire’s and another former Mexia store, the Great Atlantic and Pacific grocery store, known far and wide as A&P. Many Mexiaites of today might not know where that store was located. It was close to where the Lions Den is, on the north side of East Commerce Street. Kenneth Mathis also says he always enjoyed meeting up and talking with the late Frank CONNELL, then the “head honcho” at the former Berry-Barnett Wholesale Grocery Company. I’m not the only one who remembered some happenings of the “good ole days.” So did Kenneth Mathis… *** A recent delightful visit by a grandson of my late physician uncle brought back memories of a major change for doctors in our health care packages. In other words, my memory bank (however foggy at times it may be) of a long gone era hit the start button. I began to think about the days when doctors made house calls. The grandson I mentioned brought back memories of my uncle, Dr. James R. DICKSON of Arp, a brother of my mother. “Uncle Doc,” we called him. He was one kind person who had to cover a wide area in the East Texas oilfields in the Arp-Troup area, not far from Kilgore.
