THE DAY WE CATCH UP

Dear Readers: Welcome to FEB. 29! Yes, 2020 is a leap year, a calendar year that has one extra day in it. What’s going on? Earth goes around the sun in approximately 365.25 days. To account for that extra quarter day, one full day is added in February to the calendar every four years.

African Americans have a storied history in Central Texas

“African Americans in Central Texas History” a book that covers Afro-Texans from the beginning of slavery through the formation of agencies intended to help enslave people to modern days. It is a collection of learned researchers who wished to tell the truth of slavery and the people who controlled and encouraged it. The 14 writers and the two editors, Bruce A. Glasrud and Deborah M. Liles, represent more than 30 years of scholarship in the history of African Americans in Central Texas. These fine writers and scholars are discussed in the introduction of the book. Central Texas is defined as 54 counties south of the Red River, a line from the western border of Wichita County, including Limestone County and to the south, Colorado County.
