    WILLIAM ‘BILL’ GEORGE MCCULLOUGH

WILLIAM ‘BILL’ GEORGE MCCULLOUGH

William “Bill” George McCullough, longtime Mexia businessman and civic leader, passed away at his home on Dec. 1, 2020, at the age of 71. Bill was born April 26, 1949, in Mexia, to V.A. and Sophie Busby McCullough. He graduated from Mexia High School, Class of 1967, where he was an outstanding athlete, well thought of by his classmates, and voted “Most Handsome” his senior year. Continuing his education, he received his BBA from Stephen F. Austin in 1971, where he was also a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity.

Prior to moving back to Mexia and joining his father in the Mexia Butane business, Bill worked in Houston and College Station for GMAC. He has been owner of what is now Propane Energy for many years. Bill has been actively involved as a civic leader in numerous organizations in Mexia. He has served on the Mexia City Council, Mayor of Mexia, a member of the Board of Directors of Incommons Bank, President of the Mexia Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of General Mexia Hospital, Mexia Library Board, and a District Director of Texas LP Gas Association. He was a longtime active member, and Sunday school teacher of the First Baptist Church.

Although Bill had many outside interest and activities, none was more important than his time with his family. He loved his family and made sure their needs were met. Whatever activities his children were participating in, he was there to support them. However, becoming a grandfather was the highlight of his life; his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He also enjoyed spending some of his spare time on the golf course; he was an avid golfer but enjoyed all sports.

Bill was a true Christian, an honest man, always friendly, and treated everyone the way he wanted to be treated.

He was preceded in death by his parents, V.A. and Sophie McCullough.

Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Audrey Giddens McCullough; children Scott McCullough and wife Sarah, of Montreal, Canada, and Courtney Spath and husband Bobby, of Mexia; grandchildren Maxine McCullough, Spike, Kennedy, Duke, Boomer, Dixie, Maverick, Addison and Dollie Spath; and sisters Gail Smith and husband Jerry, and Carolyn Goodman and husband Wally.

A Celebration of Life Service is to be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Marcus Sheffield officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Samford, Holt Roberts, John Ward, Tony Killingsworth, Walter Van DeWeghe, John Posey and David Reese.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gibbs Memorial Library, 305 E. Rusk St., Mexia, TX 76667, First Baptist Church, 500 E. Carthage, Mexia, TX 76667 or a charity of choice.
