Virginia Lee Griffin Collie

Virginia Lee Griffin Collie of Wortham passed away on Jan.15, 2025, at Parkview Regional Hospital at the age of 83. She was born in Sherman to Henry DuPont Dewey and Edith Hale Griffin on Sept. 16, 1941. She moved to Teague when she was six years old with her family when her father became the head electrician at the town’s power plant. She graduated from Teague High School in 1960 as Valedictorian. She went on to business school in Waco. She married Lee Wayne Collie on Nov. 26,1960, and they had two daughters, Aleatris and Jennifer.

Virginia worked for a Ford Mercury dealership in Teague as the office manager until it burned in the late 1970’s. She then found work as the Fairfield Clinic as office manager for Dr. Keller and Dr. Crossno and worked there some 12 years. She went on to work as clinical managers in several DFW medical offices for several years. She yearned to be home and moved back to help Dr. Timothy Allen run the medical clinic in Teague for three years. After Dr. Allen sold his practice, she commuted weekly from Teague to Flower Mound working at an orthopedic clinic in insurance claims and medical coding. Virginia was also a notary public and worked elections for Freestone County. She eventually semi-retired and worked part time for Haynie Oil Company in Corsicana until her full retirement at age 75.

In addition to working outside the home, she never neglected her most important job, being a mother. Her daughters came first in her life; she was always actively involved in all their activities, wherever they were, she was. She served as President of Fairfield Band Boosters and traveled with them on all their many trips throughout the country. Virginia was a faithful Christian; she taught Sunday school GAs, and willingly participated in many other activities. She was an active member of the Wortham Baptist Church for many years.

Virginia loved to sing, and she had a beautiful soprano voice, which she performed in many choirs in the Freestone County area. Virginia was a 60-gallon blood donator until she developed Leukemia. She fought and beat it three times.

Virginia was very well read, she loved reading novels, sometimes two or three at a time. Also, crossword puzzles, word games, and watching her favorite TV show, Jeopardy were her favorite things to do in her down time. Most people in the family could never beat her at these types of games.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Vernon Ray Griffin; sister inlaw, Margaret Griffin; sister Paula Jean Jackson, brother ollie in- law, Jackie Jackson; and husband Lee Wayne Collie.

She is survived by her two daughters, Aleatris Stanley of Denton and Jennifer Capers and husband, Bill, of Wortham; grandchildren, Chase Pritchard and wife, Jamie, of Roanoke, Tyler Pritchard and wife, Trina, of Argyle, Jack Tanner Stanley of Flower Mound, Manton Capers and wife, Katie, of Lewisville, Logan Capers and wife, Darci, of Euless; great grandchildren, Colin Pritchard, Palmer Pritchard, and Pace Pritchard.
