Alvin Ray Armstrong

Alvin Ray Armstrong passed away on Jan. 14, 2025, in Mexia at the age of 85.

He was born on Nov. 22, 1939, in Groesbeck. On Feb. 17, 1961, Alvin married his lifelong sweetheart, Hattie Beene, and they lived a happy life in Mexia for over 60 years. Alvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a friend to all. No one was a stranger to him, and he would talk to anyone anytime. Alvin loved his family, and his most precious moments of his life were those spent with his family who he loved dearly.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Vera Armstrong, brothers Bobby, Gene, and Randal Armstrong. He is survived by his wife, Hattie Armstrong, his sisters Darlene McPherson, and Treletta Dunlap, his daughters, Deena Wideman, and her husband, Shay, of Bandera; Terrie McCoslin and her husband, Dean, of Mexia; Kelli Haynes, and her husband, Larry, of Mexia; his grandchildren, Michael Haynes and his wife, Morgan; Hollie Palk, and her husband, Tyler; Megan Haynes and her husband, William; Macy Young and her husband, Ryan; Taylor Wideman and his wife, Bailey; Mollie Vaughn and her husband, Riley; Collin Wideman and his fiancé, Kyra Clark; his great grandchildren, Greyson, Henry, and Bob Haynes; Tucker Thompson, Cayden and Jace Young; and many nieces and nephews.

As a talented upholsterer for over 50 years in the Mexia community, Alvin brought joy to people restoring their furniture and putting a smile on their faces with his craftsmanship, friendliness and his earnest loving care. His passion was gardening, and he had a green thumb that produced beautiful vegetables that he and Hattie shared with family and the community freely. He had a particular way of gardening and gave his garden the same tender love he gave to all.

Alvin loved sports, particularly baseball. The Texas Rangers was his favorite team, and he went to the first game held in the Ballpark at Arlington, and got to see the Texas Rangers win the World Series. He spent many hours watching his grandchildren play baseball, softball, lacrosse, and even roller hockey. He was always so proud of them and encouraged them unconditionally.

Alvin’s heart was always with his faith and his family, and he gave both the time needed to make all feel special. He was active in the Church of Christ throughout his life where he served by preaching, leading singing, and communion. There are untold lives that his faith has touched.

We will miss him dearly. A memorial service to honor Alvin’s life was held on Jan. 17, with visitation at 1 p.m., and Services at 2 p.m. at Northcrest Church of Christ in Mexia with Mike Clements and Bobby Driver officiating. Interment was in the Hogan Cemetery near Groesbeck. Bobby Bailey, Aaron Woodall, Cameron Armstrong, Tyler Palk, Darron McPherson, and Riley Vaughn served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Haynes, Charles Taylor Wideman, and Collin Wideman.

Alvin’s legacy of faith, love, and friendship will never be forgotten.
