Harsh winter weather to hit Mexia
It’s not going to be a blizzard like the Texas Panhandle saw earlier in the week, but frigid weather is coming to Mexia in a couple of days.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Saturday morning will be greeted with temperatures of about 54 with southerly wind gusts up to 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Although the skies will be sunny during the day and remain clear at night, the low will drop to the low 30s with wind gusts up to 30 mph.
On Sunday the high will be about 52, but the wind will shift from the north in the afternoon with wind gusts remaining up to 30 mph. After midnight there will be cloudy skies and a 20 percent chance of freezing rain with a low about 18.
On Monday, MLK Jr. Day, chances of freezing rain remain with a high of about 29. In the evening a drop to about 12 under cloudy skies is expected. Tuesday the temperature will be about 34.
It’s time to make sure outside water pipes and hydrants are wrapped, and plants to be saved are protected. Also, pets who live outside will not be able to tolerate temperatures dropping so low. Leaving inside faucets dripping and cabinet doors open in the kitchen and bathroom could prevent frozen pipes.
People who live in RVs should make sure their units are winterized, and that plenty of propane is on hand. Caution should be exercised with electric space heaters as they are prone to overheating and causing fires.
