MORRIS DEAN KERR

Morris Dean Kerr, longtime resident of Mexia, passed away Dec. 26, 2020, in Plano, at the age of 92. A private family graveside service will be held.

Morris was born March 21, 1928, in Bedias, to Richard Andrew and Eula Gertrude McDonald Kerr, and later moved to Houston, where he graduated from Milby High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a medic. Morris was an employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Mexia from 1947 until 1986, retiring with 39 years of service. He always said, ‘I have probably wired or repaired every phone in the Mexia area at some point.’

After Morris married Anna Vera Morgan on Jan. 26, 1951, they worked and lived in many towns throughout Texas, including San Antonio, Palestine, Nacogdoches, Cleveland, Brenham, Mexia, Temple, Corpus Christi and Round Rock. However, most of his married life was spent in Mexia, and they always referred to Mexia as home.

Morris was a member of the Mexia Rotary Club, coached Little League Baseball in Mexia in the 1960s, and of course, he was a devoted Blackcat fan. He was a member of the Forest Glade Baptist Church.

Morris’ family brought him great joy, and he cherished every moment he was able to spend with them. He was especially proud of his two grandsons and his four great-grandchildren.

Morris and Vera stayed busy during their retirement years by traveling throughout North America in their motor home with a group of their friends. When they were home in Mexia, they spent many hours fishing, playing cards or playing dominos with friends. They also learned to square dance. They even recruited and taught others dancers in a Fairfield group called The Barnstompers. Friends were of great importance to them. For years, Morris and Vera dined for lunch after church on Sundays and dinner on Wednesday evenings at the Farmhouse, greeting and visiting with many friends at the restaurant. They were both extremely outgoing and known by many in the Mexia area for hosting get-togethers and events.

As their health declined, Morris and Vera moved to the DFW area to be closer to family, but they still loved and missed their close friends from Mexia and Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Eula Kerr; son Richard Morris Kerr; brother John Andrew Kerr; and sister Dickie Merle Kerr.

Morris is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Vera Kerr; daughter Deborah Kerr Prowell and husband Mark of Oak Point; grandsons Josh Prowell and wife Trista and their daughter, Kaitlyn, of the Colony, and Aaron Prowell and wife, Kathleen and their children, Meg, Owen and Jack of Corinth, TX; sister, Judith Kerr Benson and husband Ron, of Waco; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
