Marcie Lee Phillips King

Mrs. Marcie Lee Phillips King went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 25, 2019, in the Mexia Skilled Nursing Facility, among loving family and devoted friends. Viewing was held Tuesday, April 30, with the family present for visitation. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. in the Westside Church Of Christ, 102 S. Herman St., Mexia, with the Rev. John David Harding, officiating and the Rev. Clifton Davis, eulogist. Interment will be in the Mexia City Cemetery.

Mrs. Marcie Lee Phillips King was born Feb. 7, 1918, to parentage of Robert Phillips and Lubertha Thompson Phillips in Buffalo. Mrs. King went to be with the Lord in Skilled Care Of Mexia, among loving family and devoted friends. She grew up in Buffalo and attended the Buffalo Public Schools and received the Distinguished Dunbar-Douglass Alumni Award in September 2018 on her 100th birthday as the oldest living alumna. Mrs. King and Robert Williams were married in 1939. They lived in Cuero and Victoria. He preceded her in death. In 1954 she married Willie C. King in Mexia, who preceded her in death in 1965.

Mrs. King received her Christian education in the Union Missionary Baptist Church, Mexia, and was baptized by the Rev. Gus Davis at an early age. At Union Baptist Church, Mrs. King held the positions of children’s Sunday school teacher, Senior Choir secretary, Missionary Society, Deaconess, Sunday school secretary, church secretary, and Adult Choir member. She was a charter member of the Heroines Of Jericho organization.

Mrs. King’s employment career began as a housekeeper for families in Dallas and Mexia, that included Val Horn and Minnie K. Driver. Waco families included Dr. Richard and Mickie Klieman; cook at Dunbar and Ross Elementary School, Mexia; and finally as a residential trainer Mexia State School.

Mrs. King was proud to receive the Mexia State School Superintendent’s Award for outstanding service as a Foster Grandparent volunteer and was The Dunbar Douglass Homecoming Queen in 2011.

Her hobbies included cooking her famous Elvis Presley Pound Cake and other foods; fishing, embroidery, quilting, working in her church, shopping and singing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willis C. King; brothers Oscar Phillips, Charles Phillips and Robert Phillips Jr.; and sister, Lee Rutha Phillips.

Those who will cherish her memory most are her sister, Alice Ann Phillips Sneed, Mexia; nephew, Robert (Sonny Boy) Sparks and wife, Joan, Lapunte, Calif.; special niece, Marcia Ann Weathers and husband, Elmer (Bubba), Mexia; nieces: Alice L. Johnson, Odessa; and Brenda Cashaw, Waco; great-nephews, Anthony D. Weathers and wife, Sara, Rodney D. Weathers and wife, Krystal, Elmer (Lil Bubba) Weathers and wife, Deon; greatniece, Tammy M. Weathers; a host of great-great nieces, greatgreat-nephews and friends.
