Dear Heloise: I reuse any holiday cards I receive after the season is over. Those colorful or glittery front faces make great gift tags! Here’s what I do: First, I detach the beautiful front face of the card. I usually cut it into strips or squares. After the Texas Legislature spent much of 2023 in session, a bevy of new laws go into effect on New Year’s Day, though some have been delayed by lawsuits challenging their constitutionality.
The start of the new year offers a chance to reflect on the past and set goals for the future. Many of us aim to improve ourselves, but, unfortunately, New Year’s resolutions are often quickly abandoned because they are unrealistic or too difficult to maintain.
Dear Readers: Our dishwashers get a lot of use, and if your dishwasher has an odor, try to find out where the smell is coming from. First, look inside the dishwasher to examine the drain hose and the bottom reservoir for residue or food particles that may be trapped there.
Dear Heloise: I’d like to dispel the myth that you can pour grease down your drain as long as you are running hot water at the same time. If you want to avoid a backed-up drain and an expensive nightmare of a costly bill, never pour grease or oil down your kitchen drain or garbage disposal. Place all of your liquid grease in a container and seal it up. Before washing greasy dishes and pots, wipe them with a paper towel. Be sure that you dispose of the sealed container with the grease in it inside the garbage bin, not the recycling bin.
