Dunbar-Douglass Alumni Assoc.: Keeping the Legacy Alive

Editor’s note: Kamryn Nichols, a Mexia High School senior, placed in the top-12 in the state (Class 1A-6A) UIL historical essay competation, based on an African American person or group of people that made a positive impact in the state of Texas. Nichols chose to focus her essay on the Dunbar-Douglas alumni, teachers and administrators and the association that keeps their memory alive. Following is her essay:

Democracy versus Autocracy

The Democracy versus Autocracy contest continues. Just a few years ago the general view was those fine fellows like Vladimir Putin and China’s premier knew how to get things done, while in America we just talked until we tied ourselves in knots while never accomplishing anything. Just like Mussolini, they could make the trains run on time. A significant portion of the American electorate expressed admiration for Putin as a strong leader, even though he might have to kill a few people from time to time who disagreed with him. When he called his advisors together to express their opinion about attacking Ukraine, they all nodded their head like bobblehead dolls. Now the military is ruined along with their economy. Just before this happened, China was licking their chops looking at grabbing Taiwan and now thinking but for the grace of God they could be in the same shape as Vlad.
