William Douglas ‘Doug’ Hooks Jr.
William Douglas “Doug” Hooks Jr., 72, of Mexia, passed away on Feb. 19, 2020, at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia, after a lengthy heart illness. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at First Baptist Church of Mexia, with the Rev. Marcus Sheffield officiating. The family received friends before the time of the service.
Doug was born on March 29, 1947, in Temple, to William Douglas Hooks Sr. and Dixie Cook Hooks. He graduated from Marlin High School and then from Sam Houston State University in 1969. He had a very passionate opinion, right or wrong, no matter the subject. He enjoyed politics, cars, music and sporting his Hawaiian shirts. Doug was very civic oriented, being a Mexia City Councilman, Mayor Pro-Tem, was active in the Mexia Chamber of Commerce, led the Clean Up Mexia Campaign and spent 13 years on the Bistone Water Board. While he was a member of the City Council, he was proud to have been able to get raises for the police and fire departments.
Doug was a natural entrepreneur, starting several businesses that entailed everything from carpet cleaning to insurance to his Texas Sound & Service Electronics Store in Huntsville. His favorite venture was when he owned and operated Two Di For in Mexia, doing his woodworking and crafting custom picture frames. He loved that business and the relationships he made with his customers.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Dianne Hooks; parents William Douglas and Dixie Cook Hooks; paternal grandparents, John William and Lula Elizabeth Snell Hooks; maternal grandparents, Jessie James and Carrie Couch Cook; and maternal uncle, Jessie Cook.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dianne Frost Hooks; daughter, Ashley Hall and husband Matthew, of Mexia; granddaughters Mattilyn Cate Hall and Morgan Ashely Hall, of Mexia; grandsons Justin Frost McClellan and Jacob Cade McClellan, of Wortham; mother-in-law Janis Frost; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Melanie and Jon Holloway and Marcus and Molly Frost, all of Mexia; sisters Melanie Shannon and husband William, of Dallas, and Nannette Gummelt and husband Marshall, of Crawford; and maternal aunt Edna Cook of Marlin.
The familys ask that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Doug’s memory to The Waco Center for Youth, 3501 N. 19th St., Waco, TX 76708 or directly on their website at www.wacovsc.org.
