Walter Benjamin Jackson

Walter Benjamin Jackson passed away Dec. 12, 2024, in Mexia at the age of 77. Funeral services were held at 11: a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Wright officiating. Interment was in the Mexia Cemetery. Brett Dillon, Scott Dillon, Chris Welch, Chase Boyles, Turner Wise and Stewart Welch served as pallbearers.

Walter was born April 10, 1947, in Teague to Henry and Marian Dunn Jackson. He grew up in Mexia and graduated from Mexia High School, Class of 1965. In continuing his education, he attended the London School of Business and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston. On Jan. 25, 1969, he married the love of his life, Linda Hyden, in Groesbeck, and they were blessed with three children, Julie, Christi and Benjamin.

There was nothing any more important to Walter than his family. As a husband, his love for Linda was exemplified through his dedication, protectiveness, and his willingness to take care of her in every way possible. As a father, he was supportive, understanding, forgiving, and always willing to help his children regardless of the circumstances.

Walter enjoyed interacting with people of all walks of life. He believed in treating everyone the same regardless of who they were or what they had. He was very diversified in things that were of interest to him; Walter enjoyed writing (wrote several short stories), being involved in politics, and history. He was always involved in civic affairs wherever he was living.

Walter was the youngest mayor of Mexia at the age of 21. He was the Mexia Chamber of Commerce manager for several years. He also served on the MISD School Board. After living away for several years, he returned and went to work teaching for MISD, a job he thoroughly enjoyed; he loved teaching and the fact that the kids never forget you.

Walter enjoyed life to the fullest. He had an outgoing personality and greeted everyone with a big smile. He will be missed by his family, friends, and many former students.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Marian Jackson.

Walter is survived by his wife, Linda Hyden Jackson; children, Julie Amick and husband Joel, Christi Jackson, and Benjamin Jackson; grandchildren, Megan Welch, Stewart Welch, Christopher Welch, Chance Taylor, Ashley Davis, and Kelsey Mudd; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Henry Jackson; sisters, Debbie Walton, Trisha Dillon and Susan Carroll; numerous nieces and nephews; and special lifelong friends, Bob and Peggy Wright.
