Michael Hughes

Michael David “Mike” Hughes, longtime Mexia Barber passed away, peacefully, in his home in Tehuacana on July 1, 2023, at the age of 75.

Mike grew up in Dallas, graduated from Mesquite High School and attended ACU, where he met Vicki Maden. Mike and Vicki married and relocated to Dallas. In 1970, Mike and Vicki, along with their daughter, Merrianne, moved to Mexia. In 1971, he opened his barber shop, Mike’s of Mexia.

Mike excelled, not only as a barber and hair stylist, but also as a friend, confidant, and anchor of Tejas Plaza for over 50 years. His outgoing personality, love, and respect for people were contributing factors to making his business a success. He was as loyal to his customers as they were to him, which is what kept him working instead of retiring.

Mike had several passions and hobbies. He served from leadership positions for the Jaycees and other organizations at local, regional, and national levels, to riding motorcycles, collecting antique razors, and home restoration. However, his most recent passion became his greatest “Joy” - his land and his partner, Ann Reeves. Mike and Ann enjoyed cleaning and tending their land as well as raising goats and deer with dreams of retiring and building their final home!

Mike is survived by his partner, Ann Reeves and her daughter, Jennifer, and grandson, Tyler; daughter, Merrianne Hughes; grandchildren, Dylan, Abigail and Jaxon Briggs; sisters, Cindy and husband Jim Heron, Nancy and husbandJames Holeman; brothers, Jeff Hughes, and Stephen and wife Cindy Hughes; nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.

There will be a visitation with the family from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 5, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.
