Marcus ‘Marc’ Regan Holmes

Marcus “Marc” Regan Holmes, of Donie, passed away at Providence Hospital in Waco on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at age 68, having long anticipated the reunion with his mother, Elenor.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 28, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in the Union Cemetery in Freestone County.

Marc was born July 22, 1955, in Fairfield, to Jim Andrew Holmes and Elenor Faye Lummus Holmes. The family lived in various towns while growing up, but he primarily considered Donie and Teague as home. He graduated from Teague High School in 1973 and attended college at Navarro and then at Sam Houston.

Having grown up as a country boy who loved to fish, he became a professional fisherman, participating in bass tournaments all over the United States. He gave up the full-time fishing and traveling when he became a single parent of his daughter, Reagan, whom he raised since she was eight years old.

There was nothing that he could not do. He was a carpenter, cattleman, and an amazing cook. He had worked at HL&P and at the private prison in Groesbeck. Later in his life, he especially enjoyed working at disaster sites all over the United States as an operations manager and project manager and as a site safety supervisor for plant’s turn-around and site shutdowns. He enjoyed the travelling and the amazing people he met.

Marc was an avid hunter and was accompanied on many deer and dove hunts by his daughter Reagan. It was also very special to him to go with the Bates and Ferguson family to their deer lease in West TX.

Marc never met a stranger and he expected to see someone he knew anywhere he went. He had his mother’s wit and a great sense of humor, and enjoyed making people laugh while giving them a “hard time.” He was also thoughtful of others and helped those in need any chance he was given.

Marc dearly loved his grandsons and wanted to make sure they had everything they ever needed. Even as his health failed, he never stopped being funny and thoughtful, continuing to care for others, and he talked of looking forward to seeing his mom, Elenor, again.

Marc was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, William Geoffrey; his brother Billy Holmes; and his cousin who was also a close friend, John T. Burleson.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Reagan and Larry Bates of Mexia; grandsons, Krece Bates and Brace Bates of Mexia; nephew, Andy Holmes and wife Roni of San Antonio; nephew, John Holmes and wife Megan of Groesbeck; and niece, Lauren Holmes of Groesbeck; sister-in-law, Charla Holmes of Groesbeck; sister, Jeane Holmes of Fairfield; aunt, Nelda Robinette of McGregor; and special friend and caretaker, Amanda Amason of Groesbeck.
