Janis Montgomery

Janis LaRue “Jan” Montgomery entered her heavenly home on Oct. 14, 2024, at the age of 72.

She was born August 23, 1952, in Mexia to James O. “Doc” and Frankie LaRue Richardson Ingram. She was a lifelong resident of Mexia and a graduate of Mexia High School, Class of 1971. Jan married David Montgomery on March 12, 1971, and they were blessed with two sons, Michael and Stephen. Jan was a receptionist for Drs. Williford and Edgar and the Medical Arts Clinic, and a caregiver for others. For the last 15 years, she has had the pleasure of keeping the nursery and spoiling the children at the First Presbyterian Church.

Jan loved the Lord, family, friends, and she never met a stranger. Her family was her life; she loved her entire family, but nothing made her happier than being a grandmother, more affectionately known as Mimi. Jan was happily blessed with a new great granddaughter, Dakota, on Oct. 12 and looking so forward to seeing her. She, like her mother, loved all kids. She loved being with family, especially during the holidays. Jan was a good cook, her specialties were cooking banana bread, zucchini bread, enchiladas, making jelly, and canning several different foods. She not only enjoyed carrying some of these homemade goods, as a show of gratitude M ontgoMery to doctors and others who helped her, she loved sharing them friends and family. Her home was always open to anyone.

Jan had a big loving, caring heart. She was very outgoing, had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed helping others. She always looked forward to getting together with her former classmates for lunch, taking trips, and having class reunions; they were all close and always there to support each other.

Although our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend will be missed greatly, we have hope that if we live our life through Jesus Christ, we will be with her again.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Doc and LaRue; husband, David Montgomery; and brother, James Richard Lummus.

Jan is survived by her sons, Michael David Montgomery and Stephanie, Stephen “Buggs” Montgomery and wife, Gretchen; grandchildren, Dayton Montgomery and Lexus, Mason Montgomery, McKenna Montgomery, Michael Montgomery, Jr., Aimee Avera, Spencer Vanderschot, and Alexis Vanderschot; great grandchildren, Amelia Avera, Emory Vanderschot, and Dakota Montgomery; niece (like daughter), Nancy Randall; siblings, Betty Spurlock, Sharron Samford and husband, Fred, Jimbo Ingram and wife, Sissie, Johnny Ingram and Jody; and Tricia Wright and husband, Bill Wright, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews who thought the world of their aunt Jan; and other relatives and friends.

Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17 in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Wright, Jr. and the Rev. Ray Tear officiating. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery. Dayton Montgomery, Mason Montgomery, Spencer Vanderschot, Dillard White, Shawna Williams, and Lee Griffin and honorary pallbearers will be the male nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 528, Mexia, Texas 76667 or charity of choice.
