Charles Evan Baker
Charles Evan Baker, better known as Charlie, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at age 67.
Visitation will be held at Groesbeck Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mike Fautt of the Victory Gospel Fellowship Church of Wortham officiating. Burial will follow in the Wortham Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Zachary Eddings, Eric Calame, Justin Calame, Lanny Finley, Tim Longenbaugh and Kyle Calame. Honorary pallbearers will be Arnold Scott and Gerald Ray.
Charlie was born June 18, 1957, in Groesbeck, the only child of Charles Aubrey Baker and Carlene Mae Hammond Baker. He grew up in Mexia, where he played on the Mexia Blackcat team and graduated from Mexia High School in the Class of 1975. He attended McClennan Community College in Waco before starting work at the Mexia State School.
Charlie was united in marriage with D’Anna Calame on June 16, 1978, after they had met through friends in Mexia. They made their home in Wortham and Charlie changed jobs to work at American Plant Food in Wortham, and also operated a BBQ food truck while working there. He was a member of the Victory Gospel Fellowship in Wortham. After their home in Wortham burned, they moved to Groesbeck.
Charlie became a dozer and heavy equipment operator when he began work at Big Brown in Fairfield, and then worked at the Luminant mine at Kosse, until retiring in 2022.
Charlie liked to hunt and fish. He enjoyed going hunting with his son Chad to the deer lease in Mason. He always loved being out on a boat fishing at Richland Chambers and sometime at Lake Limestone, and often was joined by his wife and children. He not only caught but fried the fish he caught, and D’Anna made the very best tartar sauce. Charlie liked to cook and made a “mean” buttermilk pie. Charlie also had a green thumb and liked to garden, and he and D’Anna put up many tomatoes he raised.
He loved to play “42” with his daughter and sonin- law, and those games were very competitive. After he had back surgery, Charlie enjoyed more time watching TV, liking Westerns, Star Trak and anything Sci-fi. Sophie was his beloved lapdog. She loved him dearly and will miss him along with all his family.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Charles A. Baker in 1982 and his mother, Carlene M. Tackitt in 2015.
He is survived by his wife, D’Anna Baker of Groesbeck; son and daughter- in-law, Chad and Misty Baker of Mexia; daughter and son-in-law, Ashlee and Jacob Davis of China Spring; grandson, Braiden Baker of Mexia; granddaughter, Tynlee Sparks of China Spring; and numerous cousins and other extended family.
