Billy Don Newsom

Billy Don “Bill” Newsom, 92, of Coolidge, passed away Dec. 9 in Mexia. Funeral services were held 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Wright, Jr. officiating. Visitation with the family was held prior to the service at 12 p.m.

Bill was born Feb. 13, 1931, in Wylie to Joe Dee and Thelma Collins Newsom. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps, and it was very evident as he always wore his Marine cap. He was a salesman for French’s Co. for many years. From 1973 until 1993, he and his wife, Pat, owned and operated the Village Drive-In Grocery on Highway 171 in Mexia. Bill was a people person, always friendly, and made many lasting friends while in the store business. In some of his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and entering fishing tournaments; he displayed many of his trophy fish in the store.

In the last number of years, Bill enjoyed raising cows on his farm in Shiloh. He loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. Some of his favorite times on the farm were the times he shared with his grandson. Bill had many other interests, including, working on tractors, mowing, riding 4-wheelers, going to Walmart, and watching the Texas Rangers. During his time in the service, he also did some boxing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Thelma Newsom and brother, Joe Newsom.

Bill is survived by his son, David Newsom of Coolidge; daughter, Sherri Newsom; grandchildren, Avi Newsom and Ian Newsom; great grandchildren, Lareyna Olvera, Jayleigh Abram and Isabella Newsom; and brother, Mike Newsom of Hideaway.
