DR. ENNIS HOLMES

Dr. Ennis Holmes, well known and respected Mexia veterinarian, passed away July 17, 2020, in Groesbeck, Texas at the age of 82. He served Limestone County and the surrounding area for 54 years, prior to retiring on March 5, 2019.

Ennis was born April 10, 1938, in Houston, to Ennis R. Holmes and Hester B. (Robertson) Askew. After graduating from Mexia High School, he served his country in the U.S. Navy. He then entered Texas A&M where he received his Doctorate in Veterinarian Medicine. Upon completing his education, Ennis returned to Limestone County and opened his veterinarian business using his stepfather’s barn in Coolidge. A few years later, he moved his business, Holmes Animal Clinic, to Mexia where he remained until his retirement.

Ennis was also a cattle rancher and avid golfer. As an active member of the community, he served as president of the Mexia Ex-Students Association, on the Limestone County Appraisal Review Board and an usher for the First United Methodist Church. Ennis also served as director of the Texas Animal Health Commission in Beeville for a short time and taught microbiology for Navarro College’s Nursingprogram

He was preceded in death by his father, Ennis R. Holmes; mother and stepfather, Hester and Clark Askew; ex-wife and longtime friend, Charlse Holmes; sister, Frances Miller; brothers, Tommy Holmes and Larry Holmes; and niece, Linda Holmes Loveless.

On June 19, 1969, Ennis married Charlse Ann Moody and they were blessed with a daughter, Holly. He was a very proud and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was even a Groesbeck Goat supporter during his grandsons’ athletic endeavors. Ennis is survived by his

Ennis is survived by his daughter, Holly Kuehn and husband Heath of Tehuacana; grandsons, Christian Kyle Ellison of Austin and Cameron Keith Ellison and wife Shelby of Groesbeck; great-grand daughter, Blakely Kate Ellison; brother, Johnny Holmes and wife Charlotte of Spring; brother-in-law, Allen Miller of Dickinson; sisters-in-law, Laura Beth Holmes-Tuscana and Cynthia Holmes, both of Coolidge; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Groesbeck LTC, Limestone Medical Center and Texas Home Health and Hospice for their outstanding care over the last year.

Graveside services were at 8 a.m., Monday, July 20, in the Tehuacana Cemetery with Pastor Randy Ayres officiating. Donald Barger, Paul Barger, Craig Mathis, Rodney Armstrong, Stell Waldrop and Matthew Cockrell served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were John Ward, Cyler Davidson, Bill Kuehn and Mike Bolton.
