Shelby Eugene Johnson, MD

Shelby Eugene Johnson, MD passed away July 30, 2018, in Mexia, Texas, at the age of 72. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 3, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with the Rev. Shane Norcross officiating. Interment, with military honors, followed at the Coolidge Cemetery. John Zuniga, Preston Cobb, Scott Sykora, Shane Sykora, Joseph Sullivan and Latham Cacy served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer was Cody McClinton. Visitation with the family was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.

Shelby was born April 1, 1946, in Talco, Texas, to Shelby Jefferson and Emily Morgan Johnson. He grew up in Talco and graduated valedictorian of Talco High School Class of 1964. Furthering his education, he entered Texarkana College, then UT Arlington and graduated with his BA in Zoology from the University of Texas in Austin. Shelby began medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch and received his M.D. in June 1972. After one year into internship/first year Family Practice Residency in 1973, he entered the U.S. Air Force as a medical officer with the rank of captain and was discharged in 1976 with the rank of major.

After completing his military duty, Shelby began his family practice again in January 1977. From September 1978 through May 2003 he worked as an emergency physician, then from May 2003 through December 2013 he worked in pain-care clinics. He semi-retired in January 2014, moving his business to his home at Lake Mexia.

Shelby was happy living at the lake, just sitting and looking over the water seemed to be soothing and a great stress relief for him. He also enjoyed going to the beach, cooking and dining out.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Johnson.

Shelby is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Johnson; children and grandchildren, Jeffrey and Audra Johnson and children, Tristan Shelby and Rowan Johnson and Christopher and Keisha Johnson and children, Jack and Finn; extended children and grandchildren, Angella Sturdivant, Carra Sturdivant and John Zuniga and children, Kenzleigh, Kaitlyn and Kennedy Zuniga and Margaret Sturdivant and Preston Cobb and children, Preston II and Miranda Cobb; brother, David Johnson and wife, Pat; sister, Virginia Onyett; a number of nieces and nephews; and his four-legged companions, Morgan and MJ.
