Medical parole denied for convicted killer

Limestone County Attorney Roy DeFriend reported late Friday afternoon that Carlos Don Stultz had been denied the medical parole for which he was being considered by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Board of Pardons and Paroles.

DeFriend had been notified earlier this week that Stultz had been recommended for medical parole and if approved would be released to a nursing home with “intensive supervision.” That earlier email said the county had 24 hours to fax any protest against this move, so DeFriend asked the community to fax their response to the proposed parole.

DeFriend received the notice of Stultz’s denial around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8.

The county attorney thanked the community for responding to this matter, especially since the father of Kathy Jones, the girl Stultz murdered, has now passed away, and her mother is in a nursing facility.

“I just want to thank everybody for helping and writing the Parole Board,” he said. “The people of Mexia and Limestone County have always been such big backers of the Jones family and law enforcement; and they have done their part again of keeping twice-convicted killer Carlos Don Stultz in prison.

Keeping it in the public eye is what helps, he said.

“I’m just so glad they denied his parole,” he said, “because every time he comes up, the more I worry about him coming out. When you think about somebody who’s killed two people – and the way he killed them – going into a nursing home somewhere, that gives me pause. I would be concerned about those people in that nursing facility. And of course, children come into nursing facilities to see their grandparents. It’s worrisome to me every time someone like that comes up for parole. But they did the right thing, and they’re keeping him in. That’s all I can ask.”
