Johnnie May Burkeen
Johnnie May Burkeen, passed away May 31, in Mexia at the age of 82. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Daniel Burkeen officiating. Interment was in the Concord Cemetery. Arthur Olivarez, Dan Burkeen Jr., Guy Byrd and Ken Barnett served as pallbearers.
Johnnie was born May 6, 1937, in Oletha to William and Ida Rachel Steele Horne. She lived in the Mexia area most of her life. Prior to going to work in the Mexia State School Food Service Department, she worked for Texas Sportswear in Mexia.
Johnnie married her lifelong partner, Loyd Carl Burkeen, on Aug. 2, 1954; they shared 63 wonderful years together, prior to his death in 2018. Loyd loved planting a large garden every year and she enjoyed canning the vegetables that he harvested. She also enjoyed sewing, crafts and making fried pies, which were enjoyed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Loyd Burkeen; brothers, Herman, James, Mark and Tom; and sisters, Mary Lou and Annie Lee.
Johnnie is survived by her brother, J.A. Horne of Arkansas; special friend and neighbor, Arthur Olivarez; and numerous nieces and nephews.
